This year, Rose Mina, an international student was named Sophomore of the Year at the Hofstra Student Leadership Awards ceremony held on May 1, 2016. Rose shares some of her story as an international student leading up to being awarded Sophomore of the Year below.

My name is Rose Mina and I am from Kenya. I just completed my sophomore year and I am studying Finance and Mathematics.

My experience at Hofstra has been great. What I love most about Hofstra is the education experience. The professors are very committed in their work and they are approachable. What I learn in class is easily applicable to real life. Moreover, the class sizes enable me to have personal attention with my professors.

I also love my school because it has many opportunities for students to be involved and thus become well-rounded students.

I am involved in different clubs such as the African Student Association, HINT (Hofstra International) and for two years I was a Pride Guide. I am also a Global Mentor, and my role is to mentor new international students and help them in their adjustment to the new school and country.

All the above co-curricular activities have enabled me gain valuable experience on how to relate with people. I am also growing as a leader. At the end of the 2016 spring semester, I was humbled to be named Sophomore of the Year due to my involvement on campus. I am excited for what the remaining half of college has for me. I like challenging myself and Hofstra is giving me the platform to face challenges and growth experiences that are shaping me to become a leader who will hopefully bring change to society.

My experience as a 2012 debate lottery winner

I was 20-years old when I won the lottery. I was filled with emotions from the moment I found out I had won: anticipation, excitement, and luck. I was also slightly worried about the next step in collecting my prize, passing through the rigorous security checks. It was not a normal lottery I had won, there would be no large check to hold, no money awarded, and no long-distance relatives calling asking for favors. I had won the 2012 Presidential Debate Ticket Lottery at Hofstra University.

It all started when I found out that Hofstra University would be hosting its second presidential debate on October 16, 2012. The debate was being hosted in a “town hall” style which really piqued my interest because I felt that it was a true testament to the candidates’ debate skills. The debate also featured the incumbent president, Barack Obama. From the moment Hofstra announced it would be hosting the 2012 Presidential Debate, campus was buzzing. Suddenly classes that seemed to have little to nothing in common with politics or elections had relevancy to current events, the presidency, electoral history, etc. Students were buzzing with civic diligence and duty, encouraging others to register to vote, providing information on polling locations, and engaging in conversation about which issues were most important to them.

The debate brought students together despite differences. It was something that everyone on-campus was ready and eager to discuss. It was exciting to see so many people become so passionate about one common thing. I was also tremendously proud to be a part of the Hofstra community and to be a Hofstra student. I felt lucky to have such an important event hosted on campus and to see so much media coverage of Hofstra. Suddenly people were asking me what it was like to go to Hofstra, remarking how unique it was to be able to be a part of such a terrific university and how amazing it must be to be a part of this experience.

Flash forward a few weeks to debate time. I entered the ticket lottery after hearing countless rumors about how so many students would apply but so few would be picked. When the initial lottery had taken place, I checked my email hundreds (no, millions) of times, desperately searching for anything with the words “debate” or “YOU’VE WON!!!!!!”  As the news trucks and media outlets started pouring into campus, setting up in almost every parking lot on campus, my hopes started to fall. My boyfriend at the time entered the lottery too, but he didn’t receive the fabled “YOU’VE WON” email either.

The next day, I started hearing that students were receiving emails saying they were selected for the debate (after the first round of students was selected). I checked my email and what do you know, there still was not a “YOU’VE WON” email…but, there was one saying “Woo-hoo YOU ARE GOING TO THE DEBATE!” There it was in black and white (and red and blue in the debate logo…and yellow highlighting for the important parts). I was going to the debate!

After carefully reading the email, I responded to ensure I would reserve my ticket. In true millennial style, I thought “OMG I’m going to the #Debate2012!!!” Then I tweeted, called my mom SCREAMING (sending her into a panic thinking something bad happened) and then called my boyfriend. If there was ever a thing that could have come between us, it was the fact that I was chosen to go to the debate and he was not. He was a political science major, which in his mind gave him more reason to go to the debate than me, an English major. After some icy discussions about how he should get to go, we agreed that I was super lucky to have this opportunity and I must seize it. (On a side note, we stayed together through the debate and we are now engaged).

Before I knew it, it was debate day (the most highlighted and circled day in my planner). I arrived at my assigned time to HofUSA to pick up my ticket. After waiting in line, I went inside to find a few people I knew to wait with. We all boarded busses bound for an off-campus credentialing location. While I was waiting in line for credentialing I spotted a few recognizable faces (John Kerry and a few other political figures). We boarded busses back to Hofstra and arrived at the arena. It was shocking to see so many media outlets, and more shocking to see famous reporters and commentators (sadly, I didn’t see Anderson Cooper).

After all the excitement, everyone started getting settled into their seats. It was amazing to see the transformation of what I was used to seeing as a basketball court turned into a history-making debate stage. When the debate started and the candidates were on stage I wanted to pinch myself and find out if I was only dreaming. I was so amazed on what happens behind the scene out of the TV viewers’ sightline. It’s an incredible opportunity to see two candidates debate and to hear the media outlets commenting during breaks.

Once the debate ended, I walked out of the arena I was still in awe of the whole experience. There were still hundreds of media outlets lighting up campus with camera crews and students were bustling around discussing their thoughts. When I looked up, I saw Marine One whisking Barack Obama away.

I still consider myself incredibly lucky to have witnessed such a spectacle and even luckier to be part of such a great university that now has the opportunity to host another debate. Hofstra University will become the first university to ever host three consecutive presidential debates, a fact that makes me incredibly proud to be a student and graduate of Hofstra.

The 2016-17 Hofstra Club Sports season is off to a rousing start! Here's a look at what's transpired over the first month of the semester:

Hofstra Club Baseball began their season by welcoming their alumni back for a matchup on Saturday, September 17th at Eisenhower Park. The current squad bested the veterans by a score of 13-3.

The team then headed on the road to Selden, New York to take on last year’s National Junior College World Series participants Suffolk Community College in a doubleheader on Sunday, September 18th.

The Pride would drop game one by a score of 10-2.  However, in the second game, Hofstra wasted no time, jumping out to an 8-run first inning. Singles by Mike Neglia, Justin Cusano, John Bopp, Seamus Kirby and Tyler Symington helped fuel the rally.  Mike Ahrens tossed three very solid innings and Shaunen Kaiman and Kevin Cunningham each tossed two solid innings in relief as the Pride went on to take the second game by a score of 10-7.

Hofstra Club Ice Hockey began their season at the D2 and D3 College Showcase in Aston, Pennsylvania, from Friday, September 16th-Sunday, September 18th.

The Pride opened the tournament against Bucknell University. The game entered the 3rd period knotted at one, but an offensive explosion by Bucknell led to five goals to easily put the game out of reach.  Right winger John Voiklis had both Hofstra goals, but Hofstra would fall 6-2.

The following day, Hofstra took on the University of Maryland. Austin Natale notched a goal for the Pride, but the Terrapins were too much as they dispatched Hofstra by a score of 9-1.

In their third game of the tournament, Hofstra took on D2 powerhouse Kutztown University. In the third period Hofstra scored three goals in five minutes by freshman Vincent Luna, senior Giuseppe Chiaraville and senior David Craig, but it wasn’t enough as the Pride fell 9-3.

The final game of the tournament for the Pride came against MCHC rival Stevens Institute of Technology. In what turned out to be a very defensive game, Stevens scored two quick goals in the first period against freshman goalie Liam Hartenstein. That would be the end of the scoring for the night for Stevens however, as the Hofstra defense was strong throughout the contest. With two minutes left to play, Andrew Gagnon scored to cut the Stevens lead to 2-1. Unfortunately, the Pride could not find the equalizer and Hofstra fell to Stevens, 2-1.

Hofstra Men’s Club Rugby traveled to Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut for a matchup with the Pioneers on Sunday, September 18th. Hofstra would take an early 7-0 lead off a try by Josh Beck, but Sacred Heart would answer emphatically, taking a commanding 21-7 lead. As the first half drew to a close, Hofstra’s David Pedziwiatr was able to score a penalty kick to cut into the Pioneers lead, making it 21-10.  The Pride would pull within four points in the 2nd half, before eventually falling by a score of 36-17.

On Sunday, September 25th, Hofstra took on RPI in Troy, New York. The forward pack led by Dominic Pizzuco, Tayab Kirmani, and Adonis Fiakos set an early bruising tone for the Pride, which carried on throughout the match.  However, all of the early scoring was in RPI’s favor, as they led 12-0 before Josh Beck scored his third try of the season for the Pride to cut the lead to 12-5. Kyle Novak opened the scoring in the 2nd half, as he was able to break away and score a try inside the RPI 22 meter, for his first score of the season, which brought Hofstra within two points of tying the game at 12-10. With 5:30 left in the game, Colin Tomaselli-Greenslade ran the length of the field to score and give Hofstra a 15-12 lead.  Things would not end well for the Pride however, as on the final possession of the game, RPI scored a try and won the match, 17-15.

On Sunday, September, 25th, Hofstra Women’s Club Soccer headed to New Jersey to take on both Rider University and The College of New Jersey.  In the Pride’s first match against Rider University, Hofstra scored early off a shot from left midfielder Amy Sena, which rebounded off of the Rider keeper and was secured by striker Sarah Cordes. Marisa Saia and Captain Sarah Bouzaidi played solid defense in front of keepers, Casey Taylor and Kat Quiones and the Pride beat Rider by a score of 7-1. Amy Sena and Becca Corridon also contributed goals for Hofstra.

Following their win against Rider, Hofstra took on TCNJ, losing by a score of 7-0.

In other action…

Hofstra Club Quidditch traveled to Buccleuch Park in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on Saturday, September 17th, to play in a tournament hosted by Rutgers’ University. The tournament was geared towards new players and Hofstra won three of their four games defeating Stony Brook, Stockton, and the Horntails.

Hofstra Women’s Ultimate Frisbee traveled to their first tournament of the season in Mercer, New Jersey, on Saturday, September 24th and Sunday, September 25th. Hofstra beat Princeton, Millersville and Rowan.

Hofstra Women’s Club Rugby fell to Stony Brook, 31-0, on Sunday, September 18th and Vassar College, 84-0, on Saturday, September 24th.

My Olympic Volunteer Experience

It took me 30 hours to fly from China to Rio. The long flight made me very tired and frustrated and all my expectations for the Olympics disappeared. However, the moment I came out of the airport, the nice sunshine and beautiful views of the city lifted my spirits instantly. I felt it is so worth it to apply to be a volunteer two years ago with the three-stage selection, including an online exercise, a language evaluation and an interview.

My very first impression of the local people was that even though they don’t speak any English, they are very friendly. I remember when I took an Uber to get my volunteer clothing and name card, the lady was hesitant to drop me off at the destination. She didn’t speak any English, but she kept saying “no” to stop me from getting off the car. She called her son who speaks English to explain to me that it is a really dangerous area. I explained that there are volunteers to pick me up and she finally felt comfortable to let me get off the car. I was so impressed by how thoughtful she was to a stranger like me.
After the short training, I started to work at the Olympic Shooting Hall.

My daily duty involved leading the politicians, VIP audience and athlete
coaches to their seat, accompanying the athletes and offering them the Olympic schedules and local transportation information. I enjoyed that every day there I could meet different people from different countries. Some French boys gave me their Olympic pin and a member of team Mexico in the ISSF (International Shooting Sport Federation) also gave me the Mexico shooting team pin. After a day working, I collected a handful of pins from different people which I feel like I got a handful of love from people all over the world.

During my month as a volunteer, I got to know about Brazilian culture, watched the live Olympic game, made international friends and learned how to adapt to a new environment quickly. I am glad that I made the right choice two years ago, I am sure this volunteer experience will be one of my best memories.

On Saturday, October 1st, HofstraClub Ice Hockey took on Metropolitan Collegiate Hockey Conference rival Stevens Institute of Technology on home ice at the Northwell Health Ice Center in Eisenhower Park. Stevens jumped out to an early lead with a power play goal and lead 1-0 heading into the second period. Hofstra answered with a power play goal of their own by Austin Natale. Joe Grice quickly followed suit and scored to give the Pride a 2-1 lead. At the end of the second period, Hofstra had a 4-2 lead, after goals by Grice and Nick Lewis. To start the 3rd period, the Pride took two penalties which lead to two Stevens power play goals, knotting the score at 4 and sending the game into overtime. Scoreless after OT, the game went to a shootout, where Hofstra was unable to convert. The final score was Stevens 5, Hofstra 4. Goalie Liam Hartenstein had 42 saves for the Pride.

On Sunday, October 9th, Club Ice Hockey traveled to the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon, New York to take on MCHC powerhouse Fordham. Darren Schwartz tallied for the Pride, but the Rams proved to be too tough, winning by a score of 8-1.

Also on Saturday, October 1st, HofstraMen’s Club Rugby traveled to Colonie, New York to take on Siena College. Hofstra got off to a solid early start by moving the ball quickly, but was unable to put any points on the board. At the end of the first half, Siena was leading the Pride 12-0. To start the second half, Siena scored a try to lead Hofstra, 18-0. Although Hofstra was able to convert on two tries by Kyle Novak and Josh Beck, it wasn’t enough to close the deficit. Siena would score late in the second half to put Hofstra away and win by a score of 42-12.

On Sunday, October 9th, Men's Club Rugby took their home field for the first time this semester to take on Union College. The weather conditions were not very welcoming as torrential rain poured down for the entire game. Accordingly, the game was extremely sloppy, but both teams put their best feet forward to try to win and make the playoffs. Union managed to put the first points on the board after pounding the ball at the try line. TayabKirmani responded promptly to tie the game up quickly at 6 apiece. Union would go on to score twice more in the first half, while James Thompson would answer for Hofstra. At thehalf, the score was 17-10 Union. Hofstra was unable to score for most of the second half, with the weather impacting both sides immensely. Despite the challenges, Hofstra had some serious chances throughout the second half; twice they were called for penalties within 5 meters of the try line. Chris Abatiello was able to score in the final minute of the game and gave the Pride the opportunity to tie, but from such a long distance and in poor conditions, the kick was no good. For the second time this season, Hofstra lost 17-15 on the final play of the game.

Hofstra Equestrian had their first show of the season at St. Joseph’s College on Sunday, October 2nd. Captain Maria Sorrentinohad her debut in the open classes, placing second over fences. Meghan Tierney placed 4th in her class and Katie Jackson and Hannah Matuszak placed 6th in their classes.

On Sunday, October 9th, HofstraClub Baseballhosted the University of Connecticut in a non-conference doubleheader at Wantagh Park. Justin Cusano would pitch the entire first game, allowing two earned runs, seven hits, and stranding several runners on base. Entering the bottom of the 7th inning, the Pride trailed3-1. Sean Cunningham reached on an error and Justin Cusano followed with a single to left field to set up a Pride rally. After Trevor Bukowski came in to pinch run for Cusano, Mike Neglia was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. John Bopp then laced a single to left to score Cunningham, cutting the UConn lead to 3-2. Ryan Eisenne followed by roping the first pitch he saw to left field to score Trevor Bukowski and Mike Neglia, giving the Pride a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win.

Game two would see the Pride run into some strong pitching, and they would drop the game by a score of 6-1.

From Friday, October 7th to Sunday, October 9th, HofstraClub Roller Hockey traveled to Feasterville, Pennsylvania for the 19th ECRHA Annual Columbus Day Event. On Friday night, Hofstra's D3 squad took on powerhouse Neumann University and won, 2-1. This was the D3 squads first ever win over Neumann in the program's history. The team would also post wins over Rowan University (1-0) and SUNY Cortland (4-3).

While they were not able to notch a victory on the weekend, the D1 program battled hard and improved, dropping hard fought contests to UMass (5-1), Rhode Island (7-4), and Robert Morris (7-5).
In other action...

On Sunday, October 16th, HofstraWomen’s Club Rugby won their first round playoff game against Fordham University, 62-17. Alexa Strickland, Lili Hinojoss Madrid, and Ashley Higby all scored their first tries of the season, while Redate Negussie scored the first of her career. Captain Josh Beck scored 5 tries to help proper Hofstra to victory. Colin Tomaselli-Greenslade, Yusuke Miyajima, James Thompson, Noel Shewjattan, and Kyle Novak added tries of their own. Overall, Hofstra dominated the match offensively and defensively. Hofstra has progressed throughout the season and because of their competitiveness, they have earned a spot in the playoffs. They will look for a playoff upset against William Paterson University in the Pride’s return to the postseason on Sunday, October 23rd.

Hofstra Club Baseballtraveled to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to take on Drexel University for a three game set from Friday, October 14th to Sunday, October 16th.
In Game 1 of the NCBA Conference series, Justin Cusano took the hill to open conference play for the Pride’s 2017 season. Things did not go very smooth for Cusano, as he failed to get out of the second inning for the first time in his 4-year Hofstra Club Baseball career. He allowed 6 earned runs in 1.1 IP. Behind Cusano, Steven Pekarik came in and shut the Drexel Dragons down for the remaining 5.2 IP, but the bats never came alive and Drexel beat Hofstra, 8-1.

In Game 2, junior Sean Cunningham took the hill for the Hofstra. Through 6 innings the Pride had played a clean, defensive game and trailed the Dragons 2-0. It wasn’t until the top of the 7th inning when the Pride got things started. The Pride erupted for 8 runs, with the big knock being Kevin Cunningham’s bases clearing, 3 run triple that staked the Pride to an 8-2 lead. Drexel would mount their own rally in the bottom of the 7th, but the Pride bullpen shut the door, and Hofstra evened the series at 1 game apiece with an 8-5 victory.

In the rubber game of the series, P.J. Potter took the mound for the Pride, and he was masterful, pitching 9 innings and allowing only 1 earned run while scattering 6 hits. However, the Pride would find themselves down 3-0 in the 5thinning. Not a problem for the comeback kids from Hempstead, as the Pride rallied with 4 runs to grab the lead 4-3. Hofstra would add insurance runs in the 7th and 8th as well to put Drexel away, 8-4, and take the rubber game of the three game set.

For the weekend the biggest offensive producers for the Pride were:
·         Justin Cusano 7 hits/.636/3 RBI/2 Runs
·         Ben Lawlor 3 hits/.375/2 2B/4 RBI/4 Runs
·         Sean Cunningham 3 hits/.500/2 RBI/1 Run

Hofstra Women's Club Soccertraveled to New Jersey to take on Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, October 15th. Despite playing a solid game, the Pride were unable to find the back of the net, falling to Stevens, 2-0.

On Sunday, October 16th, the Pride hosted both Montclair State University and SUNY New Paltz. In the first game against Montclair, Heather Aleksis scored for the Pride, as they battled to a 1-1 tie with the Red Hawks. Emma Fasolino played excellent in net behind the solid defense of Sarah Bouzaidi, Marisa Saia, and Hannah Carmeli.

In the second game of the day, SUNY New Paltz and Hofstra played a well matched game. Goals were scored for the Pride by Sarah Cordes, Heather Aleksis, and Gabby Cottone. Madison Webb played excellent at midfield, and Katie Spoleti played solid defense in the Pride’s 3-2 victory.

On Sunday, October 9th, HofstraClub Ice Hockey played MCHC rival Fordham University at the Ice Hutch in Mount Vernon, New York. Hofstra and Fordham both got on the board early in the game; however, Fordham would quickly pull away beating Hofstra 8-1.

Friday, October 14th, Hofstra hosted the reigning MCHC champion Yale Bulldogs. Hofstra opened up the scoring with a power play goal scored by Darren Schwartz and assisted by Joe Grice. Yale would quickly answer to even the score at 1 apiece. Going into the third period, Hofstra trailed 2-1. Joe Grice would score in the middle of the period to even the score at 2, but that would be all for the Pride. Yale would score a late 3rd period goal and go on to win 3-2.

On Saturday, October 15th, HofstraClub Quidditch hosted a 12 team tournament where the top teams from the East Coast came to compete on Hofstra’s campus. In the first round of pool play Hofstra faced the defending National Champions, Quidditch Club Boston, where they suffered a loss, 10-180. Erin Daley scored the only goal for the Flying Dutchmen. Hofstra continued to play four more games throughout the day against the University of Rochester, Tufts University, Rutgers University, and New York University. Even though the Flying Dutchmen were not able to pull out a win, they consider the tournament a success and are working on improving for regionals.

Hofstra Club Equestriancompeted at Olde Towne Equestrian Center on Sunday, October 16th. Maria Sorrentino placed 6th over fences. On the men's side, sophomore Ryan Connell was Hofstra's top finisher crossing with a 5k time of 17:46. This was good enough for 41st overall and 7th in the club standings. Hofstra's next finisher was sophomore Andrew Grell who ran 20:34. Freshman Tyler Baron (21:36) and junior Adel Elkosh (25:59) rounded out a solid effort for the Pride.

Finally, we are proud to announce the first recipient of our new initiative, the Hofstra Club Sports Student-Athlete of the Week. Our inaugural winner, from Hofstra Men’s Club Rugby, is Tayab Kirmani. Earlier in the season, Kirmani was named the Tri-State Conference Rugby Imports Player of the Week. Their press release stated:

“Kirmani played a tremendous game in a narrow 17-15 loss to last year’s conference champions RPI. The Big number 8 was a force on defense and questioned RPI’s line with a number of powerful pick and gos at the breakdown. Hofstra has struggled in league play in recent years, but a tight match with the defending conference champs puts the league on notice. Kirmani was instrumental in the game, earning praise from both coaches and the referee for his gritty performance.”

Congratulations to Tayab!

Midway through the final period, Suffolk would score twice to take a 5-4 lead. Elijah Vaillancourt of the Pride would knot the score at five, but the Sharks would answer with another two goals to lead 7-5. With the game winding down, Joe Grice made a nice saucer pass across the rink to a wide open Andrew Gagnon who sniped in goal, to bring the Pride within a goal. Unfortunately, Hofstra could not find the tying goal and fell to Suffolk, 7-6.

Hofstra Men’s Club Rugby reached the postseason for the first time since 2010, which landed them with a matchup against the conference’s best team, William Paterson University, on Sunday, October 23rd at Mennen Sports Arena in Morristown, New Jersey. The first 20 minutes of the game were once again impressive for the Pride. Defensive holds and a couple of good runs were critical to set the tone. However, injuries and substitutions would play a major role for the Pride and William Paterson jumped out to a 10-0 lead halftime lead. The second half began with several long runs that resulted in tries and conversion kicks for the Bears. Hofstra was able to convert one try by Josh Beck, who scored in each of the Pride’s games this season. Hofstra would suffer a playoff loss, 84-5.

Hofstra Women’s Ultimate Frisbee traveled to New Brunswick, New Jersey for an overnight tournament on Saturday, October 22nd, and Sunday, October 23rd. Greek Life at Hofstra

As the new semester begins we think of bettering ourselves and getting more involved. Whether it be to join a new club on campus, get more involved in the community or to challenge ourselves to be more scholarly. What would you say if you could join a lifetime organization that offered you the chance to challenge yourself to get more involved in all aspects of your college career? Well just one of the many options on campus is to join Hofstra Fraternity and Sorority Life.

We see in our community how fraternity and sorority members strive to continually challenge themselves and their members to be better. Whether it be pushing their brother and sisters to get that A on a test, or to join them on a Saturday afternoon to give back to the community through Snow Angels, Shake A Rake, or other local service opportunity joining a Greek-letter organization allows you to develop as a student leader while building bonds that will last a lifetime. As the recruitment season starts, we asked the leaders of the Greek community to share their experiences with you.

OUR GREEK LEADERS
Nikki Lilly
President of the Panhellenic Council

“Sisterhood to me is always having people there for you to support you in whatever journey you want to take on. Sisterhood is always having a shoulder to cry on or an ear to listen to you. Sisterhood is having people who you feel completely comfortable around and are able to be you true self. Sisters are there to push you to be the best you possible. Joining a Panhellenic sorority is the gateway to having all of these things and so much more. You are not just joining your own organization but you are joining a community of strong, empowered women who are going to be there for you not only throughout your time at Hofstra but for the rest of your life.”

Shawn Hamel
President of the Inter-fraternal Council

“Brotherhood is having a group of people that, even though you may have different opinions or outlooks, will still be there for you in your time of need. Being a part of a fraternity has taught me so much about being myself, both in my own organization and on the larger scale of IFC.”

Anibel Vargas
Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. Fall ‘15

"Being a member and Founding Sister #1 of the Zeta Nu Chapter de Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. is an experience that I will forever hold dear to my heart. When I first became interested in my organization, I had no idea the impact it would have on my life professionally, socially, and so on. LTA is rich in history, being that it is the first and largest Latina sorority in the nation. We have a tradition of saluting, which I extremely enjoy because it shows the passion that our members have for our organization. Being part of a Latina organization on Hofstra's campus is a unique experience. We are currently the only Latina sorority on campus, thus, we have the great opportunity to share our history and help impact the campus community in a way that's different than the other organizations on campus. Part of our mission is to "Promote unity through charitable and educational programs. Maintain a higher standard of learning and serve as a voice for all students." Additionally, the fact that we are different helps bring us together with the other sororities and fraternities on campus because we come together to help our campus community through our differences. Being a member of LTA fills me with immense joy and pride."

Matt Benemerito
President of the InterFraternity and Sorority Council

"Going Greek is a remarkable opportunity to grow as an individual and team-member, give back to different communities and noble causes, and the chance to build upon many skills like networking and leadership."

Andrew Gagnon put the Pride on the board with nineteen seconds left in the first to cut the lead 2-1. Hofstra would begin the second period much stronger. They quickly scored two goals to take a 3-2 lead; both scored by Elijah Vaillancourt.  By the end of the second period, Fordham would answer with two goals of their own taking a 4-3 lead into the third period. With heavy offensive pressure by the Rams, they would add another three goals while the Pride fell silent. Fordham beat Hofstra by a score of 7-3.

On Friday, February 10th, the Pride traveled to Newark, New Jersey to take on Stevens Institute of Technology for the last game of the season at the AmeriHealth Pavilion at the Prudential Center; home of the New Jersey Devils. Brandon Fauci scored two goals in the first period to give the Pride an early 2-0 lead. Hofstra wouldn't score in the second period, but only allowed one goal to head into the third period up 2-1. Halfway through the final period, Stevens would score to tie the game. Andrew Gagnon would quickly respond for the Pride, which would then be answered by Stevens to knot the game at three goals a piece forcing the game into overtime. Just a minute into overtime, Stevens would score the game winner to defeat the Pride.

Hofstra finished the 2016-2017 regular season with a record of 3-9-2.

Hofstra Hockey Teams Participate in Landmark Events

The weekend of February 17th-19th was full of exciting and historic events for both the Hofstra Club Ice Hockey and Hofstra Club Roller Hockey’s DI and DIII teams.

Hofstra Club Ice Hockey met St. Thomas Aquinas College for an exhibition game under the bright lights of the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Sunday, February 19th. The game was live streamed on the Hofstra Recreation Facebook page. The game got off to a quick and physical start. STAC was able to jump on the board early in the first period to take a 1-0 lead heading into the second period. The second period was controlled by a huge offensive wave by the Pride, but they only were able to capitalize on one goal by Eli Vaillancourt, which knotted the score at one going into the third period. STAC would score early in the final period and then again nearly ten minutes later to take a 3-1 lead. Pat Greaney would help close the gap for Pride by scoring towards the end of the game, but there wasn’t enough time left for Hofstra to complete the comeback. The final score was 3-2.

Hofstra Club Roller Hockey’s DI and DIII teams played their final home weekend of the season on Friday, February 17th and Saturday, February 18th at Skate Safe America in Old Bethpage, New York. The DI team kicked off the first of five games against West Chester University, which was aired live on the Hofstra Recreation Facebook page. Much of the first period was played at an even pace. The first goal scored by West Chester was a penalty shot, which really deflated the excellent pace played by the Pride to that point. West Chester would finish the period with a commanding 3-0 lead. Without a goal by either team in the second, the Pride were down to their final twelve minutes in the third period. West Chester would add another goal, to make their lead four, and Andrew Gagnon would erase the shutout to put the Pride on the board. The final score was 4-1 in favor of West Chester.

The next morning the DI team was back in action against Robert Morris University. Andrew Gagnon would continue his scoring ways from the previous night to give the Pride a 1-0 lead after one period of play. Danny Correia, Nigel Grove, and Andrew Gagnon would all score in the second period to extend the Pride lead to four. The third period saw an offensive explosion by both squads. The Pride would maintain their pace by scoring an additional three goals to answer the Colonials’ three goals. Scoring for the Pride in the third period were Nigel Grove twice, to complete his hat trick, and Nick Lewis. Hofstra defeated Robert Morris, 7-3.

At noon on Saturday, the DIII team took the rink against Neumann University. Neumann scored 2:35 into the first period, which was answered less than two minutes later by the Pride’s Steven DiFiglia. Before the first period ended, Neumann would score twice, taking a 3-1 lead into the second. In the second, both teams would score three times. Ryan Kelly, Ryan McCallen, and Eli Vaillancourt would all net goals for the Pride, but Neumann still held the lead, 6-4. In the third period, Anthony Accardi would score for the Pride, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win as Hofstra fell to Neumann, 8-5.

The DIII team would have a rematch against Neumann University just four hours later. The first period saw Neumann score first followed by Brian Darmstadt scoring for the Pride. Neumann would take a 3-1 lead into the second. Despite a Hofstra goal by Anthony Accardi, Neumann would add five goals of their own in the second to extend their lead and take an 8-2 lead into the final period of play. In the third period, Matt Tavernite would score a power play goal for the Pride and Steven DiFiglia would net an even strength goal, but it wasn’t enough to beat Neumann, as the Pride fell by a score of 10-4.

In the fifth and final game of the weekend, the D1 team took on the Knights from Neumann University. The first period saw Neumann dominate with five unanswered goals. The Knights would answer their five goals with another five in the second, with the Pride scoring once by Andrew Gagnon on the power play. That would do it for the Pride on offense, as Hofstra fell to Neumann by a score of 12-1.

The DIII team’s next game will be at the 2016-2017 ECRHA Championships in Feasterville, Pennsylvania against SUNY Cortland.

After being snowed out of their first home tournament, Hofstra Quidditch took the field for the first time on the Intramural Fields at Hofstra on Saturday, February 25th. Their first match was against Long Island rival, Stony Brook University. It was a hard-fought match from both sides with quaffle points being traded throughout the match. Hofstra would prevail when Robert Levinson snagged the snitch to secure the victory and add 30 extra points. The final score was 160* - 90.

Hofstra next took on the Macaulay Marauders in a very physical match. Brenden Miller was able to hold down the defense by maintaining bludger control for the majority of the game. Despite solid play, Hofstra lost by a snitch grab, 130* - 90.

In their final game of the day, Hofstra took on the Jetpack Ninja Dinosaurs. The game was very heated to start, but once the snitch came on the pitch, Hofstra’s chaser offense exploded with Amy Mu scoring behind the hoops consistently. Hofstra widened their point differential with a snitch grab by Nathan Schwartz securing the victory, 160* - 90.

Mike Fitzpatrick, Mike Benvenutti, Ryan Garry, and Bryce Todd all contributed two goals each for the Pride.

In their second game of the day against the Hawks of Monmouth University, the Pride started off slow before storming back for a 9-6 victory.

Josh Beck would add a second try, to help lead the Pride to their first pre-season win.
